CCHA MITE LEVELS

Let’s start with the terminology. Levels of hockey are based on age just like any other sport.  We just give them fun names.  “Mite hockey” is for players aged 8 and under of all skill sets without prerequisites.  The CCHA organizes “mites” into four levels based solely on age:

  1. Mite (aka “Big Mites”) - Generally, 2nd and 3rd graders.
    1. There are three levels of Mites.  East, West, and South.  These represent three levels of like-skilled players.  Historically, we have 4 East teams, 4 West teams, and 3 South teams.  Regardless of level, Mites practice one evening during the week (1 hour), once on the weekend (1 hour) and have one game on the weekend (1 hour).  One weekday practice is added weather permitting.
  2. Lower Level Mites
    1. Minimite - Generally, 1st graders.
      1. Depending on numbers, there are typically 4 to 6 evenly balanced teams.  Players practice on Saturday morning/afternoon (1 hour) and scrimmage Sunday morning/afternoon (1 hour).
    2. Termite - Generally, Kindergartners.
      1. Depending on numbers, there are typically 4 to 6 evenly balanced teams.  Players practice on Saturday morning/afternoon (1 hour) and scrimmage Sunday morning/afternoon (1 hour).
    3. Rookie mite - Pre-K aged 4+ at the start of the season.
      1. Depending on numbers, there are typically 4 evenly balanced teams.  Players practice on Saturday morning/afternoon.  Coaches will add scrimmages to the practices as the year progresses.
