  • Responsible for knowing and ensuring the CCHA’s compliance with USA Hockey, Minnesota Hockey, District 6 and CCHA bylaws, rules, policies and procedures.

Detailed Description of Responsibilities

  • Member of the Executive Committee of the Board
  • Along with the President, Treasurer, Vice President of Administration and Secretary, the VP – Hockey Operations is expected to be fully engaged in all CCHA business and to provide direction to the rest of the Board with respect to the administration of the association. The VP – Hockey Operations should, therefore, be familiar or get familiar with what it takes to run a 501(c)(3) non-profit enterprise, how to be a board member of such an organization and apply a general business operations perspective to the association.
  • The holder of this position will be expected to be engaged in the business of the association on a year-round basis.
  •
  • Board Liaison to the Hockey Development Committees; Tryout/Player Placement Process; Coaches
  • HDC Members. The VP Hockey Operations is the person responsible for identifying, interviewing and recommending to the Board the members of the HDCs and the selection of a Chairperson for each of the Boys Hockey Development Committee (the “BHDC”) and the Girls Hockey Development Committee (“GHDC”) (the BHDC and GHDC, collectively, the “HDCs”).
  •
  • Tryout Process/Player Placement. The VP – Hockey Operations is expected to be deeply involved in and understand fully the tryout process, to be involved in the drafting of any tryout plan, and for shepherding that document through any Board approval process that is required. During tryouts, the VP – Hockey Operations will be expected to participate “in the tryout room” for every level where the person does not have a player to ensure that tryouts are run with integrity, according to plan and in a way that can be defended to the membership should it be called into question.
  •
  • Coaches. Heavy involvement in the identification and selection of coaches is expected.
  •
  • D6 Representative. The CCHA plays in District 6 of Minnesota Hockey. D6 holds monthly board meetings from August through February where one representative from each association attends and the D6 Board facilitates. D6 is run by a Director, assistant directors, and a President elected on a rotating basis from the D6 associations’ presidents. These meetings are where you learn about things impacting the CCHA as it relates to D6 and MN Hockey. D6 is the place where disputes among and between associations in D6 are resolved. D6 is also the place where associations are disciplined for not following the rules, though serious violations may also come within the purview of MN Hockey. D6 also holds supplemental disciplinary committee hearings for players and coaches that do not follow the rules. You can expect to be asked questions by parents whose players get fighting or misconduct penalties in games and who are otherwise required to appear before this committee.
  •
  • Hockey Operations Issues. This is a catch-all category to make you aware that many things will come up during the year that people will expect you to handle because these things don’t fit neatly in anyone else’s area of responsibility. For example, equipment issues (broken, lost or in need of replacement) will arise as will facility issues (e.g., concerns about the quality of the ice, the Zamboni-running capabilities of rink staff, player behavior at rinks, etc.).
  •
  • Chairperson of the Grievance & Disciplinary Committee. The G&D committee is responsible, generally speaking, for handling all grievances filed by parents and players against coaches, the CCHA and other players.
  •
  • Updating the Handbook. Annually, you need to solicit from other Board members any changes they’d like to see made to the handbook. The changes need to be summarized in a table for members and the new version of the Handbook, if it’s been updated, posted for members on the web site in July or August of each year (i.e., well in advance of the next hockey season) so that members have a chance to understand and comply with the changes.
